Our story

    why dutchruling.

Built by someone who navigated this himself, after the existing firms wouldn't help.

When I completed my master's at Tilburg University and started my first job in the Netherlands, I wanted to apply for the 30% ruling. I went looking for resources that fit my profile. There was almost nothing relevant.

So I reached out to existing tax firms and consultancies to handle my submission. I spoke to six. Their responses changed my approach completely.

    • An established expat tax firm told me I wasn't eligible.
    • An online expat tax filing service said the same.
    • A large international tax consultancy said my application would be rejected, and offered to fight it in tax court at "maybe 50/50 odds."
    • A mid-sized Dutch tax advisory was willing to take the case, but only after paid assessments.
    • An executive mobility group never responded.
    • An expat HR-channel service said they only work through employers, so I couldn't engage them directly.

So I went the other way. Three months of research, reading every 30% ruling case I could find. Then I filed my own application through my employer.

My employer initially disregarded that my case would qualify. It didn't match the standard highly-skilled migrant profile. After I shared the research I'd done, they agreed to file and support me.

Three weeks later, Belastingdienst approved my application. I received my 30% tax savings.

    That's my story.

After that, I helped a few close friends and others through their applications, with good results. Over the past few months, I've watched too many friends, peers, and strangers online navigate this process cluelessly. That's why dutchruling exists. To share the knowledge and expertise I've built over the last 18 months.

One promise: the 30% Check tool will always be free.
